Coney Island Polar Bears go to China

12/27/2010

The First Daming Lake International Winter Swimming Tournament will kick off on January 1st, 2011 in Jinan, China. Daming Lake is a spring water site located in Jinan, Shandong province. This is the first event of its kind to be held at the lake and is proudly organized by the Winter Swimming Committee of Shandong Swimming Association and the Jinan Daming Lake Scenic Area Management Committee.

The President of the Winter Swimming Committee of Shandong Swimming Association, Hongshan Fu, said that winter swimming in spring water is a rare opportunity to swimmers, and it is the first time that an international winter swimming competition takes place in Jinan. Through this event, he hopes to raise awareness about this winter sport and to attract more people to learn more about this activity.

The Britain Sparta Winter Swimming Club, Russian Winter Swimming and Training Association, as well as swimmers from all around China will be participating in this event.

Three delegates representing United States will be attending this competition. They are: Robert Edward Bailey, Robbie Pope Bailey and Sarah Feingold, from Coney Island Polar Bear Club, New York.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing organization in the United States. The club swims in the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island every Sunday from November to April. Dennis Thomas is the president of the Polar Bear Club and he is assisting his members on the coordination of logistics for the Daming Lake competition. If you are interested to learn more about The Polar Bear Club, please visit www.polarbearclub.org or contact Dennis Thomas via email buell@rcn.com
